As Vic mentions early on, music can motivate, it can be a blessing, but it can be abrasive as well as a curse. It’s this very challenging topic of music and worship in the church that was covered on this edition of Crosstalk.
Vic’s guest was Dr. Don Kurtz. Dr. Kurtz has bachelor degrees in both Music Education & Bible, a Masters in Sacred Music, and a Doctor of Ministry. He is an adjunct professor at Maranatha Baptist Bible College and is on the Pastoral Staff at Calvary Baptist Church in Watertown. He has been communicating what the Word of God says about music and worship for close to 30 years. He is author of the book, “Worship and Music in the Word: A Genesis to Revelation Study”.
If you’ve ever tried to defend a biblical basis for music, you may have been led to feel as though it’s intolerant to challenge the near constant change that seems to take place in the music field. As Dr. Kurtz pointed out, there’s nothing wrong with change itself, but instead what is the parameter for change? He noted that we need to discipline change by the Word of God. Since God is a moral God, any change in music such as the notes, rhythm, etc. must also represent the character of God. In other words, we can’t short circuit the process and look only for a moral beat or rhythm; we need to make sure all parts of the music properly represent the God of the Bible.
Dr. Kurtz’s book “Worship and Music in the Word: A Genesis to Revelation Study” looks at areas such as the creation of music, the patriarchs and their music, Mosaic worship, a study on Psalms, the disintegration of music, Christ’s teaching on music and more.
Remember that God does not accept all forms of worship allegedly geared toward Him. He’s looking for those who worship Him in spirit and in truth. This fact alone makes this Crosstalk a critical one worth reviewing as well as sharing with friends and loved ones.
Dr. Kurtz’s book “Worship and Music in the Word: A Genesis to Revelation Study” is ideal for your personal library, for your pastor and for the music leader in your church. You may obtain one copy for a donation of $20 or 3 copies for a donation of $50 to Crosstalk. The book has 350+ pages providing a comprehensive study on worship & music, biblical principals and areas of application. It’s a powerful tool for you, for those in the pulpit ministry and those involved in the music and worship ministry in your church. Call 1-800-729-9829.
